
University of Basra organizes a panel discussion on the Qatari role in the Eritrean-Djibouti conflict
College of Education for Women at University of Basra organized a panel discussion entitled “The Qatari Role in Resolving the Eritrean-Djiboutian Conflict over Ras and Doumeira Island 2008-2018.
The seminar, organized by the Department of History and presented by Dr. Haider Abdel Wahed Nasser, dealt with the Qatari mediation in the conflict between the states of Eritrea and Djibouti in East Africa over sovereignty over Ras and Doumeira Island.
The panel discussion touched on the fact that the border conflict had started since 1996 and caused many casualties between the two parties, and this conflict was renewed in 2008-2010 until the Qatari mediation led by Prince Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, which resulted in the signing of a number of principles, ended this conflict.
The episode added that there was another Qatari mediation during the reign of Prince Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, following the renewal of this conflict in 2017, and this mediation led to the cessation of the conflict in 2018.
