Basra University organizes a seminar on the application of GIS techniques in estimating the quantities of solar energy in Basra Governorate
The College of Education for Women at the University of Basra organized a seminar entitled “Application of Geographical Information Systems Techniques in Estimating the Quantities of Solar Energy in Basra Governorate and the Possibility of Exploiting it for Desalination of Marine Water”
The seminar delivered by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Jassim Muhammad Al-Hassan dealt with the activity of rationalization and the exploitation of renewable energies, as the study dealt with the existence of a huge potential estimated at 3000 megawatts m2 of solar energy with monthly variations according to weather variables, as the techniques of information systems and remote sensing were applied in calculating these quantities .
He added that choosing the optimal sites for setting up solar power plants in the coastal region and the possibility of using them to establish seawater desalination plants and to face the problems of salinity in the Shatt al-Arab waters as part of the ingredients for sustainable development of renewable energies.
