The College of Education for Girls at the University of Basra held a seminar as part of the requirements of the master's thesis entitled: "A geopolitical analysis of the crimes of the dissolved Baath Party in Basra Governorate 1968-2003: The genocide graves as a model".
The seminar presented by student Sarah Mahmoud Shamal aimed to shed light on the geopolitical effects left by the crimes of the Baath Party on Basra Governorate during the period 1968-2003, with a focus on the mass graves as a model for these repressive policies.
This seminar included a statement of the nature of these crimes from a geographic and political perspective, focusing on Basra Governorate as a model, due to the geopolitical and geoeconomic importance of the governorate, in addition to the fact that it witnessed many violations that affected various social components. Statistics of the Ministry of Planning / Central Statistical Organization indicate that the number of mass graves in Basra Governorate reached (23) graves, representing (11.4%) of the total number of mass graves discovered in Iraq, estimated at (202) graves, while the Martyrs Foundation determined the number of mass graves discovered in the governorate at (30) graves.
