The College of Education for Women at Basra University organized an attendance seminar on traffic congestion in Basra Governorate. The seminar held by the Department of Geography and it lectured by the brigadier-general, Riyad Jassim Abdullah Al-Eidani, Traffic Notification Manager in Basra,  where he dealt with the traffic congestion in Basra Governorate due to the low efficiency of the streets as a result of their aging,  the existence of some cracks and meanders in them, and  the narrow width of some streets at a time when the governorate witnessed an increase in the number of cars that greatly exceeded its carrying capacity. Al-Eidani added that there are fewer bridges and traffic tunnels, which led to overcrowding in the number of cars at traffic intersections , this resulted in a delayed access to work sites for the citizens of the governorate, whether they were employees of state departments or workers in the private sector.

The traffic congestion problem also exacerbated the problem of air pollution due to the stopping of cars and the release of carbon dioxide.  The study found some solutions,  including expanding transport routes to accommodate large numbers of transport vehicles,  establishing bridges and tunnels at traffic intersections, and activating public mass transit  especially for state employees.
