University of Basra discusses the army and power in the Arab world
College of Education for Women at University of Basra discussed the issue of the army and power in the Arab world.
The workshop aims to shed light on the role of the army in political life in the Arab region since 1954.
The researcher reviewed the phenomenon of the army in the Arab countries bypassing its natural role of protecting territorial sovereignty and its transfer with all its symbolic and material weight from the borders of the homeland to the borders of politics and power.

The workshop included that the military institution is not satisfied with the role of border control and protection of nations from external threats, but also contributes to decision-making and the making of presidents as well, as happened in Algeria, Libya, Iraq and Egypt.

The researcher concluded that the military in the Arab world succeeded in seizing power because they possessed toughness and an enviable sustainable efficiency. Since the thirties of the last century, the Arab military elite managed to bring about the first military coup in the Arab world led by Bakr Sidqi and Abdul Latif Nouri in Iraq, and so far it has succeeded in forming A kind of adhesive glue that is difficult to extract from Arab political life.
