The College of Education for Women at the University of Basra organized a seminar on the indicators of acid rain in the province of Basra, an applied study for the 2016-2017 rainy season, given by Dr. Ahmed Jasim Muhammad, a lecturer at the Department of Geography.

The research aims to detect the phenomenon of acid rain in Basra Governorate, as it suffers from high levels of air pollution as a result  of the expansion of the oil industries and industries that depend on sources of burning fossil fuels in a very large way, specifically electrical industries. The rainy season 2016-2017 was chosen as a model for the study. Dr.Ahmed added that two observations of two rain showers were identified which covered the entire governorate, the first on November 30 and December 1 in 2016, while the second on March 23-24 , 2017 at 30 sites, and the rain pools were installed in them.

The study indicated that the results of the analysis of rainy samples showed a decrease in the pH  indicator values, specifically within the areas close to the oil production fields in the districts of Al-Zubair, Al-Madina, Al-Qurna, Al-Siba, and some  areas near the electrical power generation stations, for instance, Al-Hartha and Al-Maqal. Moreover, the samples of the second observation recorded pH values less than the first observation, since it is the first splash of rain of the season, that helped to dissolve sulfur oxides and nitrates in the atmosphere, which in turn recorded high concentrations, that is mainly caused by burning oil and gas associated  with it. The rest of Basra regions recorded values that exceeded the acid value, but some were close to the acidic characteristic, indicating  the existence of a clear change in the chemical properties of rain precipitation towards the acid rain characteristic.
