A scientific study at the University of Basra examines agriculture in the Shatt Al-Arab
A scientific study at University of Basra prepared by Mortada Muzaffar Al-Kaabi from the College of Education for Women examined the reality of agricultural crops and palm trees located on the Shatt al-Arab.
The study, which was published in a book entitled "Saline incursion into the mouth of the Shatt al-Arab (a study of the establishment of an organizational dam and its environmental impact)" for a number of authors, showed that the lack of water needs and the effect of the saline tongue led to a serious decrease in the number of palm trees, in addition to a clear disappearance of agricultural crops.
In addition, the research dealt with livestock in the province and the effect of the salt tongue on fish mortality in the Shatt al-Arab River, as well as an inverse relationship between the decrease in the amount of milk in cows and buffaloes with an increase in water salinity.

The study found that there are many scientific scenarios to solve the problem of water quality deterioration in Basra governorate, including the proposal to build a dam on the Shatt al-Arab and in places (Sinbad Island, Umm al-Rasas Island site, Abu Flus site, Lisan Ajiradah site, Ktaiban channel site, north of Basra). Research that the best place to build this dam is (Sinbad Island site, north of Abu Flus port) after applying scientific methods in choosing them.
