The master's thesis at the College of Education for Girls at the University of Basra examined "The USS Pueblo Crisis of 1968 and its Repercussions".
The thesis submitted by researcher Saba Abdul Hussein Mohsen Al-Eidani in the Department of History aimed to analyze the crisis of the detention of the USS Pueblo by North Korea in 1968, by reviewing its political, military and diplomatic dimensions, and evaluating its repercussions on relations between the two countries, as well as its impact on the balance of power in the Cold War and American intelligence strategies.
The thesis included the historical aspects of the incident, starting with the detention process and accusations of espionage, through American and international reactions, and reaching the negotiations that ended with the release of the crew after intense diplomatic pressure.
The study concluded that this crisis represented a political victory for North Korea, as the ship is still being held by it to this day, despite continued American demands for its return and compensation for the damages suffered by its crew. The incident also revealed gaps in the intelligence system.
