Under the patronage of the President of the University of Basra, Professor Dr. Muhannad Jawad,
under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Education for Girls, Professor Dr. Amal Muhammad,
and in the presence of the Scientific Assistant,
the College of Education for Girls/Human Rights Unit, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, organized an awareness seminar entitled
"Pink Month and Breast Cancer Awareness" on October 27, 2025. The seminar was attended by Al-Thaqalain Hospital and a group of college faculty and students.
The seminar aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer, emphasize the importance of early detection and its role in prevention and treatment, enhance psychological and social support for women with and recovering cancer, and highlight the role of academic and healthcare institutions in spreading the culture of health awareness.

• Asst. M. M. Mutab Abdul-Hussein Dawood
With the participation of Dr. Ola Al-Asmar, an oncologist from Al-Thaqalain Hospital, she delivered a valuable scientific awareness lecture on the importance of early detection and modern treatment for breast cancer, noting that hope and awareness are the two fundamental pillars of recovery.
The lecturers addressed several important topics during the seminar, most notably:
• Definition of breast cancer and the factors that increase the likelihood of developing it.
• The importance of self-examination and regular screening in early detection and increasing recovery rates.
• Psychological and social support for patients and the role of family and community in supporting them.
• The role of hospitals, especially Al-Thaqalain Hospital, in implementing awareness and humanitarian campaigns to support patients.
• The responsibility of university students in spreading the culture of health awareness within the community and university.
During the symposium, Al-Thaqalain Hospital offered free screenings to the college's female students as part of its awareness campaign aimed at promoting a culture of early detection. This humanitarian initiative reflects its commitment to women's health and its ongoing support for the university community.
The symposium also witnessed remarkable interaction from the female students, who presented questions and contributions that reflected a high awareness and genuine concern for public health and the importance of prevention.
At the conclusion of the symposium, the college deanship extended its sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Ola Al-Asmar for her valuable lecture and humanitarian efforts in supporting breast cancer patients, and to Al-Thaqalain Hospital for their fruitful cooperation and noble humanitarian stance in providing free screenings to the college's female students, and for their prominent role in spreading health awareness and serving the community.
The symposium emphasized that awareness is the primary weapon in combating breast cancer, and that early detection saves lives and instills hope in life. It called for the continuation of these activities, given their significant impact in building a society that is aware and supportive of women.
