The College of Education for Women at the University of Basrah organized a seminar titled “The Ailing Lifeline of Basrah (Shatt Al-Arab): Challenges and Strategic Solutions.”
The seminar aimed to highlight the numerous challenges facing the Shatt Al-Arab, including climate change, fluctuations in water inflow, rising temperatures, and increasing evaporation rates, in addition to regional water policies affecting Iraq’s water share. These changes have significantly impacted Basrah Governorate in general and the Shatt Al-Arab in particular.
Among the most notable effects are the intrusion of saline water from the Arabian Gulf northward into the Shatt Al-Arab, the انخفاض in water levels, deterioration in water quality, increased soil salinity, and the decline in agricultural fertility. These issues necessitate in-depth study and the development of appropriate solutions and strategic plans for mitigation.
The seminar was delivered by faculty members from the Department of Geography:
Assistant Lecturer Zainab Sahib Abdulameer
Assistant Lecturer Haneen Sadiq Abdulabbas
Lecturer Dr. Hasna Khazal Mawazi
